The picture was taken by John Nevins Andrews, certainly in Western Sichuan (a Chinese province that was a part of Historical Tibet).

"A cultural history of Tibet" was first published in 1967 but the picture is effectively older.
It was actually taken by Sir Charles Bell in the 1920s when he was visiting the Tsang Province.

The engraving was found in "Portraits from the zoological gardens" that was published by Colnaghi and Co Editors.
Note Shigatse is the capital of Tsang only. Ü one is Lhasa.

The engraving in question was already present in 1845 (date of the first publication of William Youatt's "The dog"). The author(s) of the drawing and then the engraving stay(s) unknown.

This work by Nina Scott-Langley was published in "William Hutchinson's dog encyclopaedia" (1934).
The dogs were probably two of those that were imported by Eric and Irma Bailey (or maybe two of their direct descendants). Hard to say. The first hypothesis is more plausible.

The original drawing (black-and-white)was first published in the English dog magazine "Our dogs" that was established in 1894.
So 1895 is a credible date even if more recent ones are given by various sources (1930 for example).

Actually this plate was first published in 1952. It was in "Kamerad Hund : Ein Bilderalbum allen Hundefreunden gewidmet von der Austria".

Maybe a young adult but definitively not a puppy for me. This dokhyi illustrated the article written by Irma Bailey and published in 1937 that I have mentioned previously.
Photo taken in Tibet, certainly by Mr. Bailey himself.

Shi Wang belonged to the famous and controversial Chinese breeder Wang Zhankui.
This specimen was a native Tibetan Mastiff (yuansheng zangao). I confirm his exceptionnal longevity.
