The correct name of this dog is "Shi Wang" (#29422;#29579;: Lion King). "Huang" generally means "yellow" in Chinese. By the way #40644;#29422;: "Huang Shi" (Yellow Lion) is a very common name for Tibetan Mastiffs in China.

The correct name of this dog is "Bhotean". That's a mix between Indian and English languages. It means "Tibetan".
Remember words with the same etymology: Bot (Tibet/Tibetan in Tibetan),Bhote (Tibet/Tibetan in Nepali and many other languages of Northern India), Bhutan, Bhutia, Bhotia etc.

This tobacco card was published by the Gallaher Limited society of London between 1934 and 1939.
A raisonable hypothesis is that the figured dog was Irma and Eric Bailey's Rakpa (imported in 1928 with four other dokhyis).

The photographer of this clipped dog, that was pictured in Lhasa, is Eric Bailey. It is confirmed by his wife Irma in her famous article "Dogs from the roof of the World" (American Kennel Gazette, 1st of March 1937).
End of 1920s, early 1930s is a plausible extrapolation for the date of the photo.

This engraving was first published in Charles Frederick Partington's "British cyclopaedia of natural history" (1836).
A coloured version appears in 1837-1842.
The dokhyi in question is undoubtedly the male of the zoological gardens.

"Tangri, seven-year-old 10 stone Tibetan Mastiff, is one of the very few of this particular breed in England. Weighing more than is master, Coastguard intelligence Officer S.J.Naylor, of Galley-hill, Bexhill, he is his constant companion and guard during his hours of duty."

According to his son Tim, the picture was taken by Ivor Noel Morgan White between 1951 and 1953. He was working for the Kentish Express and as a freelance photographer around Sussex.
Tangri is one of the last TM raised by Mr. Bates in Wipsnade Zoo. It is said that all known Tibetan Mastiffs in the UK had died out in 1957.
