    Ciao Stefano and the others,

Most caravan/pastoral do-khyis have hunting instincts. Many historical texts describe them killing small preys to survive or putting wild yak at bay in order to protect their masters or their flocks but I would not consider they are real hounds. They are guard dogs first.
In the same way most of the shakhyi strains are excellent guard dogs. But they are hunters over all. A traditional use that is really rare in a country where killing game is forbidden by religion and by traditional law.
Please have a look at another picture of Malenchi and Malchik:

I think their flock-guardian characteristics are more visible here than in the previous photo (where they could appear more graioid).
The similarities between Sven Hedin's dogs living circa 1900 and the following modern Xinjiang Ao bitch and her pup are too obvious to be denied.

Note that the breed is never used as a hunting dog because Tazy (sighthounds) and falcons or eagles from former Chinese Turkestan are far more efficient in this task.

A me questi cani sembrano Landseer o Mastini dei Pirenei!

Effectively the Landseer or the Mostin are piebald too. They are both bigger anyway (even if some "Xinjiang Mo Aos" can be really powerful).
Personally I would compare the Chinese breed to your Pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese "Domenicane" or to Balkan flock guardians such as the Ellenikos Poimenikos (Greece), the Karakachansko Kuche (Bulgaria), the Tornjak (Bosnia-Croatia), the Srpski Pastirski Pas (Serbia)...
Note the Xinjiang Mo Ao can be self-coloured too (pure white or pure black dogs are common).

The names of Hedin's dogs are not Turkic ones. They are Russians. Please accept my apologies.

    Saluti
